The Vancouver Mural Festival is an annual event in Mount Pleasant, focussed on bringing large scale art and other forms of cultural expression to the community. Along with mural installation, they also host live performances, including music, comedy, drag, and burlesque.
The VMF organizers were looking for an artist to do a live mural installation over a one day period, while sharing the stage with other performers. The ‘VMF’ calligraphy is interlaced through the ‘year 5’ type, applied in metallic copper paint to add a bit more visual interest. The piece was designed to be relatively simple and restrained so that painting it would be achievable within the allotted timeframe, and so that it wouldn’t be too much of a distraction for the performances.
Being a part of such an awesome, community oriented event while also having the experience of painting in front of a live audience was an unforgettable, invaluable experience.
