First Try

This piece was painted in a skatepark near where I grew up, and was my first foray into forced perspective. I chose to employ a somewhat mild angle for this effect, as I wanted the type to remain legible from all directions, while still achieving the interesting quality that forced perspective brings. If you compare the first and second photo you’ll notice that, in the first photo, the type appears to sit flat despite being on an angled surface, while the second photo reveals that a different perspective shows the type to be heavily distorted. This has been complimented with eye catching copper and silver metallic paints and simulated refraction between the colour segments to create a dynamic and eye catching installation.

The line ‘no warm up, first try bitch’ is from one of the most well known skateboarding movies of all time, Yeah Right. It was chosen so it could be a source of inspiration for anyone at the park attempting to learn new tricks, while also alluding to the movie (a reference almost everyone at the park will understand). The line is said by Owen Wilson right before doing a bluntslide, a difficult trick. The clip from the movie can be viewed here.
